Table 2 Definition of outcome measures

From: Spatial and temporal characteristics of gait as outcome measures in multiple sclerosis (EDSS 0 to 6.5)

Outcome

Description

Step length

Distance from a point of the ground contact of one foot to the point of the ground contact of the other foot, i.e. left to right foot and right to left foot.

Step time

Period of time taken for one step.

Percentage of double support time

A proportion of double support time from the gait cycle. Double support time is a period of time when both feet are in contact with the ground. It occurs twice in the gait cycle, at the beginning and at the end of the stance phase.

Base width

Lateral distance between the heel centre of one foot to the line of progression of the other side.
